For the Milano Design Week, from 5 to 12 September 2021, Casa degli Artisti hosts Cabin Fever, a multimedia installation by Cesare Saldicco and Giulio Colangelo that combines art, design, and technology. The project was conceived within the Department of New Technologies and Musical Languages of the “Tito Schipa” Conservatory of Music in Lecce. The work consists of three geodesic domes of different structures and sizes and three sound spaces equipped with infrared sensors. The presence and movements of visitors generate small acoustic variations both inside their own dome and in the other two domes. Cabin Fever was born in September 2020 with clear references to the pandemic situation. It works on the isolation of the individual and his simultaneous planetary connection and interdependence. Each visitor enters the sound spaces alone but interacts with others in an indirect and inevitable way through technology. Cabin Fever refers to the “hut syndrome” or prisoner syndrome, which affects those who, due to fear or anxiety, prefer to continue their isolation and avoid contact with the outside world. Therefore, the visitor finds himself in a sort of comfort zone where he can recall self-isolation, listen to his own fears, and exorcise the deepest uncertainties. Cesare Saldicco is a composer, multimedia artist, and filmmaker based in Milan. Research interests include the use of emergent dynamical and fractal systems in generative works and nonstandard synthesis, glitch/noise aesthetics, and new forms of interaction and self-organized presentation.
