ARCO Madrid International Contemporary Art Fair

ARCOmadrid 2023, organised by IFEMA MADRID will celebrate its 42nd edition from February 22nd to 26th, reasserting its intention to continue exploring past, present and future practices.

ARCOmadrid is Spain’s international contemporary art fair which, since 1982, has been one of the main art market platforms and an essential piece in the international circuit dedicated to the promotion and diffusion of artistic creation.

The 2023 edition confirms its international relevance: in total, 214 galleries from 37 countries. 171 of these will form part of the General Programme. The curated sections will welcome the rest: Mediterranean: A Round Sea with 20 galleries; Opening by Allianz, made up of 17 galleries, and Never the Same. Latin American Art with 11 galleries. The sector’s trust and commitment to the Fair are reflected in the interest in participating in the next edition, driving the incorporation of new international galleries that confirm ARCO’s role as a pre-eminent hub for artist visibility, the active market and knowledge about art. A total of 214 galleries from 37 countries will make Madrid the international contemporary art capital, with the Mediterranean region at the heart of its analysis.

The main axis of the Fair, the General Programme, will be made up of 171 international galleries selected by the Organising Committee, with about thirty of these galleries participating for the first time, or returning after many years, such as Capitain Petzel, Contemporary Fine Arts, David Zwirner, Mendes Wood DM, Nicolai Wallner, Rüdiger Schöttle, and Timothy Taylor. While galleries such as Mehdi Chouakri, Neugerriemschneider, Perrotin, Ruth Benzacar or Société show their trust in ARCOmadrid yet again. They are joined in their loyalty by Chantal Crousel; Elvira González, Giorgio Persano, Helga de Alvear, Jocelyn Wolff, Krinzinger, Lelong, Mai 36, Meyer Riegger, Nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, Peter Kilchmann, ProjecteSD and Thaddaeus Ropac, among others.

Parallel to the General Programme, ARCOmadrid will also have three curated sections. Its research theme for 2023 will be Mediterranean: A Round Sea, curated by Marina Fokidis, with the advice of Bouchra Khalili, Hila Peleg and Pedro G. Romero, with the intention of mobilising relationships from bottom to top and side to side, an endeavour to arrive at a meeting point for the shared intensities of this geographic area. The presence of 20 galleries from 13 countries will make it possible to delve deeper into works by artists such as Anna Boghiguian -KOW-, Iman Issa -Rodeo-, Jumana Manna -Hollybush Gardens-, Mohamed Bourouissa -Kamel Mennour-, Silvina Der Meguerditchian -Kalfayan Galleries-, Stefania Strouza -A.Antonopoulou.Art-, Laia Estruch -Ehrhardt Flórez- and Hana Miletić -Lambda Lambda Lambda-.

Opening by Allianz, will again provide a space for the discovery of new proposals at the fair. The selection by Julia Morandeira and Yina Jiménez Suriel will represent the fair’s belief in young national galleries with the participation of 17 galleries including Constitución, Foro.Space, HOA, Pequod Co., The Liminal and Zina.

Never the Same. Latin American Art will help strengthen research into Latin American creation and its relationship with all the players at the fair. Curated by Mariano Mayer and Manuela Moscoso, it will be made up of a selection of artists from Latin America with 11 galleries including Jaqueline Martins, Max Mayer, Karen Huber, Crisis, Proyectos Ultravioleta and Hache.

The Forum will take place in addition to the contents, expanding on the analysis of art from the Mediterranean region with a structure as multi-faceted and plural as the actual art practises of the different countries, and will take us closer to the commitment and constant support of collectors from different contexts.
